A short history of J. H. Quistgaard
Jens Harald Quistgaard, born in 1919, grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark, and showed his extraordinary artistic talents from a very early age. He began studying the works of local craftsmen like blacksmiths and carpenters and learned the basics of their trades while being trained as a sculptor by his father.
After a formal education as a drawer and silversmith, Quistgaard began his work designing various household items. He made his breakthrough in the early 1950s and was quickly sought out to become Chief Designer of the American company Dansk Design, a role which he would fill until the early 1980s.
During his years at Dansk Design, Jens Quistgaard reached worldwide fame with many iconic tableware sets being designed under his supervision like the now famous Flamestone set. He reached the peak of his productivity in the 60s when his designs became almost synonymous with the common image of Nordic vintage, a fact that is still true today.
In the 80s, Quistgaard moved back to Europe before ultimately returning to Denmark, where he died in 2008.
